NEWS: Will There Be Nudity in Carnival Row Season 2?

As I write, it’s Thursday in pretty much every part of the world (sorry, Alaska and Hawaii), which means that the second season of Carnival Row, which will also be its final season, is airing tomorrow. The question on every coomer’s lips is, of course, “will there be nudity?” And if you’re like me, you were probably also wondering at exactly what time Carnival Row Season 2 airs, so we’ll get to that as well in a bit.

I’m not going to waste too much time talking about the first season of the show except to say that we got a number of nude scenes out of it, and that includes from much of the main cast. Maeve Dermody as Portia Fyfe gave us the very first nude scene of the show. That was in the pilot episode, and later in that very same first episode, we got a nude scene in a fae brothel from Karla Crome as Tourmaline Larou. Cara Delevingne plays one half of the show’s lead duo with the role of Vignette Stonemoss, and she appears nude twice in the first season – once in the sex scene with Orlando Bloom from the third episode that everyone knows and then once more in the fourth episode, wherein she’s topless as part of a hallucination that Ridecart Philistine has. The last shots of nudity in the show are courtesy of Tamzin Merchant in her role as Imogen Spurnrose, who has a pair of nude scenes in the seventh and eighth episodes of the first season.

But will any of those characters be getting naked in the finale of Carnival Row?

Well, information has been scant, so let’s see what we’ve got. If you’re content with turning the clock back almost two years, we’ve got this article from the Daily Mail with some lewd shots of Cara Delevingne on the set of this upcoming season. She also appears to be mid-makeup in many of the photos, so the nudity might be a backstage thing more than a harbinger of any skin we’re to see on screen. Really, the only thing I can find that’s both more recent and more concrete than that is the “Content advisory” on Amazon Prime’s page specifically for Season 2, which lists the following: “Nudity, violence, frightening scenes, alcohol use, smoking, foul language, sexual content.”

That’s a good sign, but if a lot of more recent shows are anything to go by (cough, House of the Dragon, cough), then we risk getting a whole lot of nude scenes from unnamed extras and very little from the main actresses, the celebrities that we’re here for. What even are the possibilities? As far as the official trailer shows us, we know that Cara Delevingne, Tamzin Merchant, and Karla Crome, of the actresses that had nude scenes in the first season, are in the second season. We also got a number of shots of Caroline Ford as Sophie Longerbane, who did not appear naked in the first season. Is there any chance that we’ll finally see Caroline Ford nude in Carnival Row? I certainly hope so. Maeve Dermody does not appear in the trailer, so hopefully that doesn’t mean we’ve lost another potential.

AmazonAdviser posted only yesterday that Season 2’s official rating is TV-MA, which is on par with an R-rating for films. You might have caught something else in that piece, though, which is that some people will actually get to watch the first two episodes of Carnival Row tonight, on Thursday, February 16. What gives? Nothing abnormal, it turns out. It’s a time zone issue. Yahoo reported the same thing, noting that the episodes air on the American East Coast at midnight (Eastern Time) as Friday, February 17 kicks in and at 9pm (Pacific Time) on Thursday night on the West Coast. A piece by Tom’s Guide adds a 5am (British Standard Time) air time for the United Kingdom and a 3pm (Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time) air for our friends in the southeast of Australia.

But what can you do if those times don’t work for you or you just cannot be assed to give the second season of Carnival Row a go unless you know there are going to be nude scenes featuring your favorite actresses? Well, fear not, for I plan to do here exactly what I did with House of the Dragon and (rather more disappointingly) Rings of Power.

That’s right. All you have to do is check back on this page every Friday – or even more frequently, for the freshest news – to catch up with the updated nudity report on every newly-released episode from the series finale of Carnival Row. All updates will be added to the bottom of the document, so just scroll down to the end for a quick glimpse into whether there have been any updates. All updates will be labelled with a date and possibly even a timestamp if it’s a very eventful day.

UPDATE – Feb 17

I just finished watching the first two episodes of the second season of Carnival Row. Titled Fight and Flight and New Dawn, neither of these episodes had any nudity.

The first episode had a “nudity” advisory and the second episode didn’t, but it did have a “sexual content” advisory. The latter is technically true in the tamest possible sense, but as to the former, unless a pair of titties flashed on screen while I blinked, I have no idea what that’s about.

There were a pair of close calls, though.

In the first episode, Cara Delevingne prepares to have a bath and teases her lover, Drivethru Overpass, to help her out before stripping down… the last of which happens off-screen.

In the second episode, Cara and Orlando Bloom have a sex scene, but this again happens off-screen. We see the build-up, we see the aftermath (during which the apparently now shy Vignette Stonemoss is wearing some sort of nightie), but we do not see the act itself nor any nudity associated with it.

UPDATE – Feb 24

The third and fourth episodes of the new season of Carnival Row – titled The Martyr’s Hand and An Unkindness of Ravens – aired moments ago. There were no nude scenes in either of them.

All that said, Karla Crome seems to have a much more prominent role this season, and as we learned from the previous one, she seems to have no problem with doing nude scenes. I’d like to think that’s a good sign of what to expect, but we’ll have to find out with time.

Sorry I’m not bringing better news. Hopefully that won’t be the case next week. Have some Tourmaline Larou from last season to tide you over.

UPDATE – Mar 3

We finally got our first nude scene of Season 2. Tamzin Merchant has a sex scene near the beginning of episode 6. Check back in a bit for the 4K UltraHD captures, but in the meantime, here’s a teaser of what to expect:

The episode in question is titled Original Sins, it’s the sixth episode of the season, and it aired this morning or last night (depending on time zone-induced perspective) along with the fifth episode of this second and final season of Carnival Row.

The thirst is clearly getting to me, because I’ve been rooting around and only now found that back in January, Cara Delevingne posted an Instagram story in which she does yoga naked. Yep, completely nude yoga, shaved pussy and all.

Cosmopolitan seemed to be the ones that broke the story, and in the same article, they mentioned that even though the Carnival Row actress’ face isn’t in the shot, the tattoo on the side of her chest matches with one she is known to have.

LatestLY connected her naked exercising to her recent “erratic behavior,” which has apparently included spasmoidal body movements at an airport, running around without a shoe, drinking unknown liquids (horrifying, I know), and admiring dildos in a sex shop, the last of which is apparently not connected to her new documentary, the not-at-all salaciously-titled Planet Sex.

HotNewHipHop took a different approach, viewing Cara’s nude public yoga session as an improvement over her unstable past behavior rather than a continuation of it.

I don’t know anything about all of that. All I know is that I can’t find the full Instagram story anywhere. If you have it saved, let me know.

The seventh and eighth episodes aired two hours ago.

I’m sad to say that there’s nothing to report on the nudity front.

We have only two episodes left before Carnival Row is finished forever. If they were saving the big Cara Delevingne nude scene for last, then fair dues, but I’m going to be quite distraught if that never materializes.

The final two episodes of the second and final season of Carnival Row aired just now. The season was great, and I’m sad the show is over.

I’m probably even more sad that there were no further nude scenes in these two episodes. C’est la vie, I suppose.

Alison Brie Naked – Somebody I Used to Know – 4K Stream

I didn’t realize that we were going to see Alison Brie naked in Somebody I Used to Know until the movie released today, and even then, I didn’t realize it was coming out until I started hearing all the buzz. Ironic for an actress who talks so much and in so many interviews about how she loves nudity, but we don’t really see bona fide (bonerfide? Have I made that crap joke before?) Alison Brie nude scenes that often. Everyone remembers the Hollywood-born Hollywood star’s nude debut in GLOW, which just about broke the internet. And naturally, she had more than one nude scene in that series’ run, so we had plenty to enjoy while it was coming.

Then we saw Alison Brie naked in Horse Girl. That was amazing because we got actual full frontal for the first time from her. This is also the part where I remind everyone that for reasons beyond my understanding, none of the coverage of that nude scene anywhere on the internet was of the 4K Ultra HD version, which was available on Netflix same as the others. That is, until I covered it right here. Don’t know why no one did the same in the two-and-a-half years between, but if you saw Alison Brie naked in her full frontal nude scene from Horse Girl in glorious 4K, and you didn’t see it in the movie itself, remember you saw it here first.

But all that said, the Alison Brie nude scenes in Somebody I Used to Know are the best she’s ever done in my opinion. Yeah, the full frontal that was actually filmed from the front when she walks into the crowded store in Horse Girl is deliciously graphic, but it’s also filmed at quite a distance, which necessarily means that a lot of detail is lost. I’m considering redoing the color correction on that one some day to see if I can pull out a bit more detail, but there are natural limitations to these things when an image is made up of lower quantities of pixels.

But when we got Alison Brie topless in Somebody I Used to Know, there were definitely no problems with regard to there being too few pixels. OK, sure, in her very first nude scene in the movie, she is quite far in the distance while streaking across a golf course. In fact, there’s a point where she does a handstand with her legs spread wide, hairy pussy (or merkin) in full view and facing the camera, and she’s so far away that it’s not even clear whether it’s really Alison or a body double. She more than makes up for it, though, in later nude scenes. I’m talking especially about the one right at the end of the movie, where she’s shooting a documentary inside a naturist camp/nudist colony.

We see Alison Brie’s tits in all their glory as she’s interviewing a completely naked woman while she herself is completely naked. She’s seated at first, but her up body takes up much of the screen, giving us a terrific view of her breasts in 4K. She then stands up briefly, flashing some sideboob and bush. Alison Brie has spoken about her nudism before, including once again with reference to this movie and this scene, so I suppose this isn’t out of character for her at all. What I’d really like to know is why the internet isn’t awash with photos from Alison Brie’s nudist days, but I suppose cameras aren’t really favored in settings like that. You know where cameras are favored, though? A film set. And thanks to that, we can enjoy this wonderful gallery of Alison Brie nude in Somebody I Used to Know.

Tamzin Merchant Naked – Carnival Row – 4K Stream

The two scenes featuring Tamzin Merchant naked bring us to the end of our journey of covering all of the nudity in the first season of Carnival Row and getting us ready for the second and final season. This second season will begin to air on February 17, 2023, so only a week and a half from time of me writing this. The release schedule is going to be a bit different. As I’ve said in each of the other posts for the series, Season 1 released all in one go, which meant that the show staggering Cara Delevingne’s two nude scenes to the third and fourth episodes did nothing to dampen any spotlight monopolization that may – and definitely did – occur.

Mind you, the Tamzin Merchant nude scenes – which appear in the penultimate and final episodes of the first season – fared a bit better. They don’t get nearly as much mention as Cara’s, but they certainly get a lot more press than Orlandlo Bloom ploughing his landlady played by Maeve Dermody or the fantastical fae brothel scene featuring Karla Crome. All that said, Season 2 is unlikely to suffer from the same problem because it has now been confirmed that the new episodes of Carnival Row will release two at a time over a five week period between February 17 and March 17. Well, 29 days, technically, but you know what I mean.

The question on everyone’s lips is obviously whether we will see Tamzin Merchant nude again in the new season, and since this will be the end of the show, for the last time as Imogen Spurnrose. I will obviously be monitoring the situation and reporting on it as it goes in the same way that I did for House of the Dragon and (less fruitfully) for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Tamzin is certainly no stranger to nudity, but at the same time, she doesn’t exactly have that Eva Green or post-Twilight Kristen Stewart energy of being naked in absolutely everything she’s in.

We first saw Tamzin Merchant topless in The Tudors, which I suppose wasn’t unusual for that show. My most evergreen celebrity crush Natalie Dormer notably also had her nude debut in that show. The only other time we’ve gotten to enjoy Tamzin Merchant naked was in the French film The Dancer / La Danseuse. We could have seen her naked a whole lot more over the past decade and a bit since Tamzin Merchant was the original actress to play Daenerys Targaryen. Seriously, they filmed a whole pilot and everything, including the infamous wedding scenes with Khal Drogo. The original pilot was almost completely scrapped for being crap, and part of the rework involved significant recasting, one expression of which was replacing Tamzin with Emilia Clarke. I can’t tell you how often I hope to wake up and find out that the original Game of Thrones pilot has leaked.

I also feel like we could have gotten a Tamzin Merchant sex scene or 20 in her debut-ish role as Margo Durrell in BBC’s 2005 adaptation of My Family and Other Animals, given the character’s proclivities. In spite of its image, the network is no stranger to that kind of thing, as we have seen time and time again, and yet, no luck. Nor was there when ITV adapted the same books as The Durrells with Daisy Waterstone as Margo Durrell. The good news there is that Daisy had a certain very early role that will now scratch that itch for us forever. Bless independent short films.

For all the speculation we’ve been through, I do believe there actually is a good chance that we’ll be blessed with Tamzin Merchant’s tits again in Season 2 of Carnival Row. Why do I say this? Well, information has been scant until now, but our English rose did say in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Imogen Spurnrose stops wearing a corset partway through the second season. Mimi Rogers Naked – The Door in the Floor – Blu ray

I was initially going to start this post by saying that Mimi Rogers naked in The Door in the Floor is one of the most iconic nude scenes of the 90s. Something was tickling the back of my head over that, so I checked to confirm, and this film actually came out in 2004. I then thought I was confusing it with another of the most iconic nude scenes the 90s – the many glorious shots of Mimi Rogers nude in Walkabout, Castaway, and Puffball director Nicolas Roeg’s Full Body Massage. I was, and I was expecting that film to have come out toward the new millennium, but it actually had a 1995 release.

The reason this all stuck out to me is because I remember everyone talking about how Mimi Rogers naked in Full Body Massage was such an amazing treat considering how great her body looked “at her age,” with no further qualifiers other than the occasional – read: very frequent – MILF comments. So I looked that up to, and I wasn’t misremembering. The Floridian beauty was just months away from turning 40 when Full Body Massage premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1995. With a whopping 9 years between that movie and this one, she was almost 50 when The Door in the Floor was filmed and released.

I’m not trying to say that I watched this exact Mimi Rogers nude scene and assumed she was 18 years old or anything like that, but damn, her body looks so good. She’s built like some sort of Greco-Roman statue. And while I’m sure there are going to be some “pointy elbows”/”knees too sharp” critics out there making comments about the effect that half a century of gravity has on a woman’s breasts, I challenge anyone to look at Mimi Rogers’ tits and tell me they don’t look glorious. That shape. That nipple placement. I can only imagine their consistency is just as spectacular.

I’m not going to list all of the times that we’ve seen Mimi Rogers topless on the big screen, but suffice it to say, this movie is neither her first nor her second time. It is, incidentally, her last. No, she hasn’t retired from acting, but the only other nude scene – and I’m using that term very loosely here – she has done since then was in 2018’s Affairs of State. In that film, she flashed her ass cheeks for a bit during a sex scene, but she is still wearing panties during, so it’s a bit of a stretch to allow it to qualify. That said, getting her ass out for the camera well into her 60s is pretty legendary. Solid Good Luck to You, Leo Grande vibes.

Seeing Mimi Rogers’ hot ass in her 60s is great, but for the full Leo Grande experience minus a decade, the best offerings are right here. With all of the other nude scenes from the Miami native that have full nudity only implying it, this one here is technically the only movie in which we get proper full frontal nudity from the actress. Maeve Dermody Naked – Carnival Row – 4K Stream

The scene in which we saw Maeve Dermody naked in Carnival Row is a bit of a stealth nude scene. We discussed the irony of this briefly in the previous post for the series, the one for Karla Crome, but to reiterate now that we’re on the scene itself, the part where we see Maeve Dermody nude in Carnival Row is literally the very first nude scene in the entire series. A blessed position to hold, but that didn’t stop it from getting overshadowed by the pair of nude scenes we got from Cara Delevingne later in the season.

That said, connoisseurs of celebrity nudity aren’t known for missing a trick, so in anticipation of Season 2 of Carnival Row, which is due to release on February 17, 2023 – only about a fortnight from now, as I write – I’m sweeping up with the nude scenes that I didn’t address when I covered Cara as Vignette Stonemoss back in November. We did Karla’s nude scene a few days ago, and we’ve got the Tamzin Merchant nude scenes to close the series off. Then when the second and final season rolls out, we can start afresh and hopefully with continuing nude scenes from the cast.

As for the first season, we get treated to the Maeve Dermody nude scene about half an hour into the pilot episode. The Australian actress plays Portia Fyfe, the landlady to Orlando Bloom’s Minecraft Ryprostate. As in every landlady-tenant relationship, they are also having sex on the side. Maybe this is why Philo’s rent was attainable, though how he still couldn’t afford better digs on a military officer’s pension and a police inspector’s salary, I’m not entirely sure. Maybe he was paying Maeve for the pleasure. Who knows? I would. The good news in all of that is we get to enjoy seeing Maeve Dermody nude in a great, albeit perhaps too clothed, sex scene, the gallery of which is below.
